China is Australia’s number one dairy export market and continues to represent significant opportunities for both new and existing dairy exporters. The likelihood of success is significantly enhanced by understanding regulatory requirements and market conditions.
This site has been specifically designed to assist potential dairy exporters to China and provide them with all the necessary regulatory and market information required to obtain an export licence.
Exporting dairy products to China requires considerable planning to ensure all regulatory and market requirements are met, both locally and in China. Any organisation involved in export sales to China must first be registered with the Commonwealth of Australia, Department of Agriculture and Water Resources.
Those who need to register include, but not limited to:
Freight forwarders | Facilities |
Manufacturers | Suppliers of Australian dairy ingredients |
Processors | Any establishment where the prescribed goods will be stored and or loaded for export (excluding the wharf and airport terminal) |
Producers |
Please note that this site does not guarantee an export licence and neither will it guarantee acceptance of a dairy product into China.

To be a producer of dairy products in Australia you must first be awarded a dairy manufacturing licence from the dairy regulatory agency in your state. However, to understand everything that’s required to become trade ready, we suggest you use our self-assessment tool, Are You Trade Ready?,which highlights what you know and what you need to know about manufacturing and exporting dairy products. But remember, this is only the first step. We encourage you to read this section before exploring the rest of this site.
